I am 27, which means I am getting closer to 30. Lately I have been thinking it`s time to expect more of myself and to actually start to make things happen instead of just dream about it. That’s why I started to think about the ways I am going to improve my life this year. Here are 5 things I learned about how to change things in my life.
1. Know thyself
Even the old Greeks like Plato and Socrates already talked about self exploration and ‘knowing thyself’. Philosophy students can discuss it all day, but to me it simply means knowing your strengths and weaknesses.
>>The easiest and fastest way to get to this knowledge is to pick 5 people you trust and respect and ask them about your best and worst qualities. This means that you need to have a open mind and you need to be ready to hear things that are hard to face.
2. What works in your life
Think about what brings you joy in your life. It might be your friendships, your husband or wife, the dance classes you take. Everything that brings you joy in your life is automatically what works in your life.
>>To improve the quality of your life you also have to write down what doesn’t work in your life. Maybe it’s your job or the relationship with your parents. When you identify the problems in your life, you are that much closer to working it out. Try to think about ways to improve these parts of your life in 2018.
3. What if
When I make goals for myself I tend to dream big and think outside the box. One exercise I do is imagine a world where anything is possible. I ask myself the question: What if I could do anything in this world, then what would I do? Another exercise would be asking yourself the following question: If money was no issue, what would I do. These questions allow you to push your fears aside for a minute and let you think about what you really want to do.
4. Big goals vs. small goals
Every year I write down one or two big goals and a couple of smaller goals I want to accomplish. It’s very important to distinguish the two categories from each other. It can seem very hard to only focus on big goals and it might make you feel like it`s unattainable.
>>Smaller and more simpler goals are easier to accomplish and will give you that sense of achievement. One of the smaller goals I wrote down for myself is to overcome my fear of driving long distances in a car. I am planning to overcome this fear by driving from Belgium to Holland by car. Another small goal is to try out at least one new recipe in my kitchen every week so that I will be able to make 50+ recipes at the end of the year.
5. Create new habits
The best way to change your life is to create new habits. The beautiful thing about habits is that when we don`t have to use self control or make decisions, it will effortlessly make us do the things we want to do. Of course we need to first choose these habits and decide to practice them on a daily basis. Again, keep it simple and start small!
>>Instead of making a list of all the things you don’t want to do anymore, create new habits that will make your life more meaningful.
